After a Liver Biopsy

Biopsy results take a few days to come back.

After a liver biopsy, a patient can expect the following:

  • People may need to stay at the hospital or in outpatient care for 3 to 4 hours after the procedure.
  • Nacogdoches G.I. Consultants will review the discharge instructions with the patient—or with an accompanying friend or family member if the person is still groggy—and provide a written copy. All instructions given should be followed.
  • A friend or family member will need to drive the person home after the procedure.
  • Full recovery is expected in 24 to 48 hours; patients should avoid intense activity, exercise, or heavy lifting during this time
  • Soreness around the incision site may persist for about a week.Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or other pain medications that do not interfere with blood clotting may help. Patients should check with Dr. Jones before taking any pain medications
